Happiness-Finding It Within Yourself

Don’t Worry

Does Worry Really Cost You Double Trouble?  Remember the popular song, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” released in the ’80s? It came out during a time when my husband, Pres, and I had been going through the worst financial disaster of our lives. We had come to accept non-stop worry as the only way to survive our situation. Trying to navigate through the shame, guilt and sense of failure that hung over our heads like a dark cloud was devastating to our self esteem. And believe me in that depressed state of mind we did our fair share of grieving the losses of our real estate business, rental properties, Mercedes Benz, etc.tragic-mask It seemed the harder we worked trying to salvage our business, the more the losses deepen. We would have also lost our minds had it not been that we were newly  immersing ourselves in the Unity expansive transformational “New Thought/Ancient Wisdom teachings.

I found the teachings offered a positive perspective beyond the literal interpretations of the scriptures of which I was familiar, including the notion that the purpose of life is to be happy, joyful and fulfilled. Of course, integrating this new way of thinking in the middle of our chaos was easier said than done. Never-the-less, my desperate need for mental and emotional relief motivated me to commit to applying this new way of thinking.

So, I began the journey of refocusing my attention from the “problem” and what I didn’t have to appreciating what I did have, such as, life, health and family. To my amazement, I began experiencing deep inner peace. Noticing my feelings of despair and hopelessness gradually beginning to dissolve, I accepted the sense of relief as an indication that I was on my right path. It was a complete reversal and relief from my former distressful belief that somehow we must have been out of alignment with God’s will.

Be Happy

Is Joy And Growth Part Of Your Spiritual Journey? Happiness is an inner state and depends on what you are willing to do to realize it. While I am using the emotions of joy and happiness interchangeably, you will notice that others sometimes make sharp distinctions between them. For that reason, I love the way Shawn Anchor, author of “The Happiness Advantage” blends the two when he says, “HAPPINESS is the JOY we experience while working toward our potential .” Maslow’s highly recognized  Hierarchy of Needs concept of self-actualization expresses realizing our potential as a process and writes, “...the importance of self-actualization is the process of growing and developing as a person in order to achieve individual potential.”  And I add, our potential is our essence and our power. I also submit that consciously or unconsciously, we are all on our spiritual path of evolving into the realization of our unlimited potential and the display of our authentic self.

Is Your Path Spiritually Conscious? If you are consciously on your spiritual path, you know you live in two worlds, the world of spirit and the world of matter. While both are vibrational realities, one is visible and one is invisible. Because the visible worlds is detectable and interpreted through the senses, for most people, it is easier to focus on and become attached to what is tangible and observable

On the other hand, the invisible world of peace, love and  joy is detected through faith, and according to The Law of Attraction, it is interpreted though the vibrations of emotions. The application of this scripture speaks to the notion that we live in two worlds, “We have received not the spirit of the world . . . but the Spirit that is from God . . .  And we speak of those things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit . . . interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual. 1 Cor. 2:12-13  —Jesus called this invisible world the Kingdom of God (KOG) and directed us to look within to find it.

Is Joy Portable? Can You Bring It With You? “Joy is not in things;” Richard Wagner observes, “it is in us. Do you believe the universe is friendly and conspires for your good? If you accept the KOG within as the realm of all good, encompassing the broad spectrum of both light and darkness, then both challenging conditions and joyful experiences are part of the spiritual journey. The Great Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh in the article, 5 Practices for Nurturing Happiness shares this delightful story about light and darkness:

“According to the creation story in the biblical book of Genesis, God said, “Let there be light.” I like to imagine that light replied saying, “God, I have to wait for my twin brother, darkness to be with me. I can’t be there without the darkness.” God asked, “Why do you need to wait? Darkness is there.” Light answered, ” In that case, then I am also already there.” I love how this story reinforces the premise that there is no separation from God at any point of the spectrum.

A powerful New Testament scripture which asserts that the Kingdom Of God is the source of happiness states it this way, “For the kingdom of God is not food and drink [outer things] but righteousness [maturity] and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans14:17 ). The KOG is continuously happening all around us, one moment at a time. We simply

joy-is-portable  need to pay attention. The word happiness comes from the word, happeningYou change the what is happening in your life, by the way you choose to perceive and respond to it. Think about it, if we choose, we can love now, laugh now, learn now, and experience joy right here and now.

Two Worlds. Can You Bridge The Gap? What is your belief? Do you believe you are a vibrational being? Do you believe the universe is vibrational? Do you believe that whatever you see in the physical universe has been created in one way or the other by our thoughts or more accurately, by how we feel about what we think?  Our emotional state has a direct impact on what we are vibrating. Our thoughts are nothing more than frequencies or vibrations that resonate with similar vibrations already existing.

Let’s say there’s a condition you want to change, it could be a relationship, financial, career, health or a world condition. Of course, God gave us our minds to use, so, it’s important to give some thought to natural things because we live in a natural world. But, when you look at the condition as it is, notice whether your focused attention to it gets in the way of the evolution of it.

Decide where you are going to focus your attention. Ask yourself is it more important to be right or be happy? In other words, the attitude or consciousness with which you vibrate will determine your altitude and as a result your happiness. Abraham-Hicks offers this insight on our vibrations  “It is easy to get so involved in the results of the vibrations…that you disregard the vibrations that are responsible for those results.”

Do Intending Higher Emotional Vibrational Set Points Work?  Do you believe your deeply held thoughts and feelings create your experience? Are your emotions indicators of your vibrational frequency?  Can you at any given moment, discern whether or not you are vibrationally in alignment with what you want or in alignment with what you don’t want by simply recognizing where you are emotionally?

The emotional guidance scale offered by Abraham-Hicks gives us a way to easily comprehend whether we are hanging out in the ascending emotional energy field where we are attracting to ourself what it is we want or whether we are in a descending emotional energy field of resistance that attracts to us what we don’t want. See graphic below:

emo-guide-scale At any time, without exception, that you are focused on any negative emotion, you can begin to consciously reach for a feeling that is improved. You can use this as a way to guide your mental and emotional state into a state of higher vibration, into a state of greater peace, love, and joy.  You can use your intention as St. Paul states in the New Testament, “Set your affections [emotions] on things above [invisible] and not on the earth [visible].”    Colossians 3:2

Tips to Increasing Your Vibrational Frequency:  An attitude of gratitude is key. Having a calm temperament, or an evenness of temper even under stress calmis essential to your ultimate personal growth and happiness. Among the many spiritual practices you may use, consistency of prayer, and  meditation are vital. Be playful and spontaneous.  Also, O M -Times Magazine adds, “Get out into nature, hug someone, dance, listen to music, breathe, sing, laugh, be around animals, exercise, eat healthy food, do yoga, help others, hot bathes, surround yourself with beautiful things.”

The journey to joy takes time. While you don’t want to live in a space of fearing to think or say anything negative, yet every moment when we are at peace with our lives, our loved ones, and our universe through our spiritual practices, we are experiencing the joy and happiness our Spirit seeks.

Remember, our potential is our power and our power is our essence, and it is within us, and not without! We have the power to create our joy and happiness with our thoughts and emotions. So if we are not feeling joy in our lives, it is up to us to ask, “How am I blocking my happiness and what can I do to get on the right path?”

Are You Focusing On Change Or On Results?

Candy's Photo 2“Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get with the work you didn’t do.” Anonymous
Dear Heart Friendlove.png

Have you been dreaming of something you want that you feel would improve your life, and yet you have feared risking taking action? Do you get discouraged because “it” hasn’t changed? What would need to change in order to move forward?

No Pain, No Gain

I don’t particularly subscribe to the belief that growth only can be obtained through pain, but, as we know, everything we want in life has a price connected to it. There’s a price to pay if you want to make things better; and a price to pay for just leaving things as they are. So the question becomes, how do you navigate your life experiences when what you want is on the other side of what you don’t want?

When coming to an intersection with choices of staying in the in-between place; going back to the status quo even it it isn’t working, or moving forward, consider asking yourself this clarifying statement,  “What do I want and what am I willing to give or release in order to have it?”  Getting clear on what you want can give an uplifting perspective and the boost needed to move forward with inspired action.

My recent physical therapy (P T) sessions following my knee replacement surgery cause me to revisit my position on no pain, no gain. It gave me an opportunity to remember how vital keeping your focus on what you want is a great motivating force to continue moving forward.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being excruciating post surgery pain, my   experience of pain was pulsating between 9 and 10. I was frustrated by the consistent instruction from the P T which was, “You have to push through the pain, otherwise your knee will stiffen and defeat the purpose of the surgery.” OMG! I was already inwardly crying like a baby, and my outward response was, “What are you talking about, I can’t do this!!”

Never-the-less, when I considered what it took for me to get to this in-between place, even though I was experiencing excruciating pain, going back to the familiar debilating pre-surgery painful status quo was not an attractive option. At this point, I found it helpful to remember the classic axiom, “If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’re going to get what you’ve always gotten.”

It’s All In The Attitude

Interim Scale
Interim Scale

I knew I had to change my response from “I can’t” to “Yes, I can,” and then do the exercises required. To get from the interim of “here” where pain was registering in my brain and body at 9 and 10, to “there” which is where I wanted to be able to walk with less grit and more grace, I gradually began to push through the intense pain. Shifting my mind to a “can do” attitude made a difference. I am happy to report that 3 months following surgery, I am now walking in my cul-de-sac. It has been approximately 40 years since I have intentionally walked for exercise.

I believe it is safe to say everyone wants to see results from their efforts, however, my daughter, Sharon sharing this quote with me,  “If you focus on the results you won’t see the change. If you focus on the changes you make, you will get the results,” gave me permission to only have brief periods of discouragement and self-pity, and to trust in the process. Think about it, when you focus on results, you are generally focusing on a future event, which when achieved, hopefully, will be fulfilling. Meanwhile, you are in waiting mode to feel good. Whereas, change happens in the now. Each moment offers the opportunity to consciously focus your thinking, feeling, speaking and acting in more in alignment with what you want to be, do and have..

The Interim Gap – An Energetic Field

Rev. Michael Beckwith, founder of Agape International Spiritual Center, refers to the interim place as the gap, and offers this insight, “We are standing in the _____gap____ between what is no longer, and what is yet to come.” The gap, also called the void, is where we are not what we were and we are not yet what we are going to become.

Remember the biblical creation story in Genesis 1: bc75f745cd010169020c606df83f78b1In the beginning God created the heavens and earth. The earth was without form and void.[What is no longer] And the Spirit of God was hovering over its surface. Then [During the interim] God said, “Let there be light, [What is to come] there was light. And God saw that it was good.” (Bracketed words mine)

Research has shown that while the interim space appears to be empty, it is actually an invisible energetic field of infinite potential. Instead of what is often perceived as wasted, boring, or “Hurry up God and get me through this period of time,” this field actually offers the isness/nowness moments of opportunity to focus on the change necessary to create what is wanted. As is often said, “It” doesn’t change. We change. According to the Law Of Attraction we attract the “what is yet to come” that we are desiring, through our conscious thoughts, emotions and declarations that are in alignment with Spirit.

That’s both a scary and an empowering thought. It means that you want to joyfully take responsibility for your life. You want to listen deeply to the whispers of your own heart. The heart is the driving force behind our actions. Let’s face it, we cannot consistently act contrary to what is in our heart. Proverb 4:23 states, “As a person thinks in their heart, so is he/she.” From this we can take that the overall direction of your life cannot be isolated from your thoughts and feelings.

Science is showing us that our heart is the strongest magnetic and electrical field in our body, even more so than the brain. This means the feelings we have in our heart are changing the field, so that we have the ability to literally alter our physical reality in remarkable ways. What does it mean to listen to your heart? godwhispersIt means you want to listen to your reactions, feelings and particularly the stories you tell yourself about an event. What wants to emerge in and through you? You want to notice your mind and whether it is someplace you really want to go. Because with every thought we think, and emotion we feel, we are constructing a new reality.

Let Go And Grow

If you want to fly, you have to give up the stuff that weighs you down.”  This quote from Spirit Science speaks to letting go of what no longer is working for you. Releasing what is no longer working for you can be an uncomfortable journey. Robyn Davidson makes this observation “Like with any journey it’s not what you carry, but what you leave behind.” Robyn’s 9 month life-changing epic journey photographed by National Geographic, speaks to her leaving her city life behind to trek 1700 miles across the Australian outback with 4 camels and a dog.

In order to move forward through the rhythms and flow of ever changing life something has to be released in order to make room for the new. Be aware that you can’t create a new future holding onto the past. Let go of fear and be grateful for where you are. Letting go is not necessarily easy, so acknowledge that what you are going through is tough. Allow yourself to grieve what has ended; then embrace it. Get emotional and moral support. Lighten up and notice the messy and the marvelous things occurring all around you. Forgive everyone everything.
Life is too short for long pity parties. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. Don’t compare your life to others. What other people think of you is none of your business.
Be patient and trust in the unseen. Believe You CanBelieve in your ability to overcome obstacles.

Most importantly, believe you are connected to Gods divine plan for your life, and don’t run from it. If you don’t already have practices that support your growth and well being, develop spiritual practices and consistently work them. Prayer and meditation are vital to your sense of connection to the Divine. If meditation is new to you, it s better to spend 1 minute daily quieting your mind from your default thinking; consistency is more important than sporadic long meditations. Hold steady and keep the faith. Believe your future will be better. The best is yet to come.
