Emergency Preparedness. How Prepared Are You?

Emergency Or Emerge and See!

My ideas have undergone a process of emergence by emergency. When they are needed badly enough, they are accepted.”    — R. Buckminster Fuller

Dear HeartFriend,

There are many areas in life where we are encouraged to be prepared for emergencies. In times of natural or man-made disasters, those folks who have prepared with supplies of water, food, clothes, flashlights, batteries, and radio, etc., fare much better than those folks who have not.

Additionally, the recommendation for our financial affairs is to have at least eight months of emergency funds set aside. The encouragement for preparing for our health and well-being as a preventative measure against certain dis – ease, at the most basic level is healthy eating and exercise.

As important as these issues are, this post is an invitation to explore with me a different perspective on emergency and preparation based on Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller’s above quote. His quote opened me to an entirely different perspective about emergency and preparation.

Bucky enjoyed an illustrious career as an inventor, engineer, and architect, receiving many honors and awards. Yet, when he was a student, he was expelled from Harvard twice, and in his later years, when one of his businesses failed, he contemplated suicide.

For a man hailed as one of the greatest minds of our time, renown for his comprehensive perspective on the world’s problems, what do you think Bucky meant when he said: “My ideas have undergone a process of emergence by emergency”?

It is possible that he was referring to his ideas only being accepted when an emergency demanded an answer or solution that was possibly contained in an idea he had previously offered. On the other hand . . . .

What If Emergencies Are Opportunities?

What if the emergencies he encountered prepared him to contribute in service to the world in the extensive manner in which he did?

What if he meant his remarkable ideas and accomplishments evolved/emerged as a result of the challenges, obstacles, difficulties, problems that he encountered and worked through?

I think it’s safe to say that we all encounter hardships. I know that when I’m  experiencing “stuff” it doesn’t always feel like it’s adding expansion in my life.  In fact, I have been known to feel, think and say, “it” was blocking my expansion.

What if your spiritual practices of meditation, affirmations, declarations, positive attitudes, and faith build needed resilience for the challenging times or emergencies? Additionally, how does cultivating a supportive system of spiritual community, extended family, and friends as part of the practice, support you  in being less stressful and in recovering more quickly from unexpected emergencies?

Michael Beckwith, minister and founder of Agape International Spiritual Center, says, and I paraphrase, that for every problem there’s a question waiting to be asked. And in every question, there’s an answer waiting to be revealed, and with every answer, there is an inspired action to be taken. From that inspired action, a new way of life in and as you emerges.

From that paradigm, wouldn’t you be better able to see and accept that the Universe is friendly, and has your back? What was formerly called an emergency is now transformed into a perspective of “Emerge and See.”

See what!

What if leaning into that paradigm and cultivating that awareness you come to believe and know that your deep desires are the Universe’s impulse within?  Imagine with me that It is pulsating to express more of Itself in, through, and as more of who you truly are as Divine being. The Divine imprint that is within all creation urging you to become your greater expression.

This paradigm doesn’t relieve us from the responsibility of preparation in the various areas of life. However, what if accepting it as a valid paradigm, it would serve you in having a more expansive realization?  I believe that this paradigm suggests there is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter? That your Source, Infinite Intelligence, Holy Spirit, God, or whatever name you have for your Higher Power, is within.

For many of us, this could be an aha moment! The lyrics from the familiar hymn, Amazing Grace comes to mind, “Once I was blind, now I see…”

See what? See, accept and embrace an emergency as an opportunity to allow the emergence of more of the divine being that you are/I am.

As Job — known in the Old Testament as the man who experienced what appeared to be merciless emergencies and suffering — expressed:

He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me, I will emerge as pure gold. —— Job 23:10

There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly.                                    — R. Buckminster Fuller
