Labor Day Greetings

How do you celebrate Labor Day

“For working people and union members, Labor Day stands for something special and profound. It’s a day to honor the deep commitment each of us has to serve the children we teach, the families we heal, and the communities we love.”  — Randi Weingarten

           Dear HeartFriend,

For many of us our lives however good they may be, are also frenetic with busyness. This post is offered as an invitation for us to take this Labor Day weekend to slow down, rest, renew, and reconnect with family and friends.

For me, the above quote by Randi brought back vivid memories of my childhood when traditionally, Labor Day was marked with a street parade to demonstrate to the public the strength and hardworking spirit of trade and labor organizations. My dad who was a strong  labor leader of the local CIO Butcher’s Union would march with pride for the accomplishments they were making toward workers rights and pay.

The parade was a family affair and we as a family marched with my dad. Observing him as one of the prominent speakers and the accolades he received from the other workers, I marched in the parade with a heart filled with pride of my dad. I remember during one strike, he, along with others were thrown in jail for a fight that ensued from blocking folks who tried to cross the picket lines. The incident was published in several Los Angeles newspapers. My dad’s name was mentioned. We were scared and proud. To our relief they were quickly released. Aaah, what fond childhood memories.

Presently, Labor Day is a day of rest or the last chance for many workers to go on trips before the summer ends. For many students, it is marks one of the last few days before school starts again. In some neighborhoods, people organize fireworks displays, barbecues and public arts or sports events (with the football season starting on or around Labor Day and many teams playing their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend).

Whatever you choose to as a way to celebrate this weekend, remember to include:

Rest , Renew and ENJOY!

Dance Like Nobody’s Watching

Is There Unsung Song, Music or Dance as Your Life?

Dance before the music is over. Live before your life is over.” — Author Unknown

Dear Heart      Friend,

Have you ever thought about what it means to ‘block the flow’? From time to time, I ask myself am I blocking the flow?  As we know there are many applications that can be made to what blocking the flow means. However, in this post, I am inviting you to explore with me the following question, figuratively,

“Am I / Are you living life fully singing, dancing and/or playing the music I’m / you’re created to express?” In other words, are we moving more fully in the direction of expressing our brilliance, expressing our magnificence of the divine design within?

If not, why? The Persian poet Hafiz in the 1300’s gives us a possible answer as he writes about having a love affair with life itself. In one of his poems, he writes:

“We have all come to the right place. We all sit in God’s classroom. Now, the only thing left for us to do my dear, is to stop throwing spitballs for a while.”

What if spitballs refer to blocking the Divine flow in our own life. Think about it, are we in the curriculum of our daily life, in a sense, throwing spitballs by the attitude of  I want this to be different, change this and/or change that?

What if the insistence that things be different from what they are is akin to throwing spit balls? Imagine the awesome day we could create if we start embracing, opening up to, and inviting the curriculum of Love to have its way with us each day?

What I love about the following example of blocking the flow is that it offers another question for our consideration. Have you ever had the feeling that you are putting more energy into staying constricted and small, then you are into allowing expansion?

Don’t run down the rabbit hole of self-condemnation Rev. Micheal Beckwith admonishes as he continues to say, “perfecting your argument and your spell of smallness along the way.”

In the book The Way of Mastery, Jesus is reported to have given this parable of blocking the flow, “You could say that God is like a wise gardener who is constantly trying to grow beautiful roses. She knows exactly how much moisture to put in the soil. She knows how to make those nutrients rise from the soil through the roots, up through the heart of the stem of the flower to give forth radiant color, so that everyone that looks upon it is touched by the mystery of beauty.

And God wonders, “Well, it is interesting. These roses that I have created seem to have a mind of their own. As the elixir I tried to give them rises through the stems, they tie themselves in little knots and only a little bit of the elixir reaches out. So the petals  never quite blossom fully.”

Dancing With The Universe

So, how do we know if we are blocking the flow? What does that look and or feel like?

Dance Your Dance
Dance Your Dance

From an article by Deepak Chopra entitled, Dancing With The Universe, he speaks of it this way, “If we are out of harmony with universal rhythms, the signal that comes to us is a sense of discomfort, whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional. When we are flowing in harmony with the universe, the signal that comes to us is a sense of comfort, ease, or joy. In reality, these sensations are the voice of Spirit, which speaks to us at the finest level of feeling in our body….”

Divine Guidance

Exploring the idea of living more fully our divine purpose and expression, hopefully, brings us back to trusting and knowing that our deep desires are God’s desires. Let’s rest in the awareness that we are being led, inspired and divinely guided by the living Spirit of Love and right action.

Please take moment to read this piece and prayer which elegantly and profoundly speak to divine guidance as a dance:

Dancing With God

“When I meditated on the word  Guidance,

I kept seeing ‘dance’ at the end of the word.

I remember reading that doing God’s will is a lot like dancing.

When two people try to lead, nothing feels right.

The movement doesn’t flow with the music,

and everything is quite uncomfortable and jerky.

When one person realizes that and lets the other lead,

both bodies begin to flow with the music.

One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge to the back or

by pressing lightly in one direction or another.

It’s as if two become one body, moving beautifully.

The dance takes surrender, willingness,

and attentiveness from one person and

gentle guidance and skill from the other.

My eyes drew back to the word  Guidance.

When I saw ‘G’: I thought of God, followed by ‘u’ and ‘i’.

‘God, ‘u’ and ‘i’ dance’

God, you, and I dance.

As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust

that I would get guidance about my life.

Once again, I became willing to let God lead.

My prayer for you today is that God’s blessings and mercies are upon you on this day and every day.

May you abide in God, as God abides in you.

Dance together with God, trusting God to lead

and to guide you through each season of your life.
And I Hope You Dance!”  — Author Unknown

Remember, don’t block the flow of what is in your heart that keeps calling you. In the lyrics of the song Dance Like Nobody’s Watching, part of the verse says,  “It doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing, Just close your eyes and be yourself and feel the music . . . and dance like nobody’s watching…”

Here is an Old Testament reference of David, the psalmist who demonstrated the power of how your dance is holy and sacred: 2 Samuel 6:14 “Then David danced with all his might before the Lord. He had on a holy linen vest.”

I would love hearing from you. How does God’s desire speak through and as you?
