Change By Default or By Design

“When something is falling apart sometimes it’s for the best so that the new that you have prayed for has room to enter your life.”   -Doreen Virtue

Dear Heart  Friend

Are You Ready For Change?

As you are starting out in this new year, if you are feeling the need for a fuller, richer enjoyment of life, and are ready for change, this series on consciously creating a new design for your life may be for you.

This humorous, yet clever story makes an insightful point of the tendency most of us have to resist change.

A group of people was asked, “How many of you want change?” Everybody raised their hand.

Then they were asked, “How many of you want to change?” As you might imagine, no hands were raised.

Given your current situation, how likely would you be in the group of unraised hands’? I have been in that group many times.

What we can say about change is whether we’re paying attention or not, whether we like it or not, it is always happening. I’m sure it’s not lost on you the changes that are taking place in the world culturally, socially, environmentally, politically and religiously. Even what is perceived as positive change can be experienced as stressful.

Think about it, even though the word change normally refers to new beginnings, more often than not, transformation happens not when something new begins, but when something old falls apart.

Falling Apart Change
Falling Apart Change

From the word transformation comes the word “trans” which means across or beyond – so “transform” is rather like “beyond the form.”  A  classic example of transformation is the process the caterpillar goes through in becoming its mature divine design of a butterfly.

Of course, you and I know that evolving into a beautiful butterfly is the destiny of the caterpillar.  But did you know that the caterpillar goes through a mush stage in order to “birth” into its potential beautiful butterfly form? Although, the caterpillar rocks in the caterpillar stage, it has to release the cell images that it has held of itself as limited to earthbound crawling.

 Resistance and Transformation Story

Think about the story the caterpillar could tell of Its reaction and resistance to change when it first saw a butterfly flying. In butterfly language, It might have said, ‘Hmmm! you’ll never catch me in one of those contraptions.’

Have you ever thought or said something similar in a situation that seemed outside of possibility and your comfort zone? Most of us have. However, if you embrace Byron Katie’s position that all suffering is resisting what is, it gives impetus to consider that something more expansive may be wanting to be birthed in and as your life?

Is it stretching our imagination too far to think post-transformation the butterfly’s perspective and response changes to, ‘I’ve gained everything by releasing my limited caterpillar body to become the more expansive, beautiful butterfly self that I am’?

To take the transformation of the caterpillar further, what if it is nature’s example in technicolor of how change can be the catalyst that leads us humans toward the path of becoming our greatest potential?

What Best Prepares You For Life Changes?

My husband, Pres (deceased), and I were married for 50 years, and I loved serving in the ministry with him. Initially, our religious background and ministry were in fundamental churches.  Later, we ministered in New Thought churches throughout the West Coast and Canada, he, as an Interim Minister, and  I, as a certified Licensed Unity Teacher. Additionally, before retiring in 2010, I was honored to serve as Spiritual Leader of Unity of Fresno for 11 years. It included along with the myriad responsibilities of leadership, speaking, teaching, counseling. and leading workshops.

However, as fulfilling as that experience was, it was not always like that. You must know that in that one paragraph which spans a 50 year period, there were many instances when our lives felt humdrum. When our relationship felt on the skids; when we were financially challenged; when we felt spiritually empty, and other changes that left us feeling like our life was falling apart.

The good news and short version are over time we realized our lives had been shaken, reshaped, redesigned and relocated to the place on our life path where we were meant to be, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Our empowered thought processes and choices resulted in transformational experiences of greater good of more than we could ask or think….to be continued in part 2

Good News in Change
Good News in Change

For those of you who follow my blog posts, you may remember the comment my friend, Bill Hinton made on one of my blogs. He referred to my service as a blogger as, “Cyber – Spiritual Guidance and Inspiration [Coach and Blogger],”  If you have ever had someone say something that gave you goosebumps and a new positive perspective about yourself and what you do, you know how it feels. It certainly resonated with me. Even though it didn’t change what I do, it shifted my consciousness, I felt uplifted and immediately added the bracketed Coach and Bogger and embraced it as a succinct and powerful description of what I love to do.

In retrospect, I can see how my passion today for helping others discern, rediscover, and reshape the path leading to their souls calling was birthed out of many of my painful change experiences, and transformational choices of yesterday.

To paraphrase Gregg Braden, Author, and Human Potential Pioneer In his talk about his Human By Design upcoming course, he asks, “When we have been steeped in powerlessness, helplessness, insignificance and a  life that is devalued, how do we awaken our potentials, abilities, and capacities?”  In part, he answers, “Every crisis is an opportunity for evolution. The better we know ourselves, the more resilient we can be.”

More Than You Can Ask Or Think

Did I say I retired? As a 90-year young woman, I am joyfully pursuing my newly renamed career as a Cyber-Spiritual Guidance and Inspirational Coach and Blogger. To be living at a time when it is possible to continue serving more people even on a global basis via the internet is thrilling to me. I do not accept the ageism narrative that permeates our culture with the nonsense of, “It’s all over for a woman after 60.”

Do I at times feel overwhelmed at the rapid changes on the internet? Yes! Do I have moments when I feel like quitting? Yes! However, I have more moments

of deep gratitude for the transformative opportunities— though they may have been unwanted at the time— that change has offered me over the years. They contained the gifts of birthing and rebirthing this evolving,  mature, beautiful, wiser self that I am; a woman forever learning, student/teacher.

Likewise, the call of your soul’s purpose often disguised as change can be revealed and expressed in amazing ways. Hrithik Roshan puts it this way, “The world helps you to keep evolving and hope it’s for the better. You have to rise above all tragedies in life. you have to grow, and if you stop growing, you are old.”

Please let me know if you would like support in navigating through any areas of change in your life.

Empowering Spiritual Practices

This blog series and my forthcoming free eBook, Life’s Balancing Act, Living With Less Stress, Creating More Peace, will dive more deeply into practices that will support you in moving with more ease and grace.through changes in your life.

My hope is that you will begin to see that what you might have labeled as chaos actually contains a precious gift that has the potential to reveal and allow you —if you choose —to express more of your magnificent design that is within.

I love the phrase “Peace is our home address,” that  Martha Beck, Ph.D., offers. She continues to say, “All prayers are answered, but you have to go home (stillness, peace) to receive them. They can’t be delivered in anxiety, worry, fear, and suffering.”

“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”  — Romans 12:2

As we know, we are what we think all day long. Let’s align ourselves with the Infinite Source of Life and let Life flow through us as right action and true expression.

Visioning Success In The Future Or Now Here?

Windshield Visioning or Rear View Mirror Reflection

“The future is not some place we are going, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but to be made. The activity of making them changes the maker and the destination.”      — John Charles

Dear Heart    Friend

Most of us find an upcoming new year an invitation to reflect on our successes, wanted and unwanted of the past year, and a time to vision toward the future of what we want in 2018 and beyond.

I am fascinated by Pastor Chad Veach’s analogy in his book— Faith, Forward, Future: Moving Past Your Disappointments, Delays, and Destructive Thinking — of his use of the automobile windshield as a way of looking toward the future and the rearview mirror as a way of looking at your past.

It’s his way of saying, view the future and what you want with a wide lens, and reflect on the past to assess what you can do differently, with a narrow lens. In other words, don’t spend too much time looking back.

I think it’s safe to say that most of us want a life that is successful,; that is filled with meaning, purpose, and happiness. What if in truth we are always successful based on the habitual thinking patterns we have set up in our mind?

I invite you to consider with me the idea of success, perhaps in a different way. if our patterns of thinking are of health, harmony, happiness, and abundance, then our experiences of what we want would be considered successful.

By the same token, If our patterns of thinking are of lack, limitation, doubt, worry, and fear, then, wouldn’t it also be true that our experience of what we don’t want also be considered successful?

The adage, “Thoughts are things and you are the thinker thinking the thoughts that become the things in your life”, is a classic way of saying, our experience is going to successfully reflect our conscious or unconscious habitual thought patterns.

My Rear View Mirror Life Reflection

By the time I was 15 I had set up a mental atmosphere of failure. In retrospect, I see how successful I was at creating a thought pattern of unworthiness, powerlessness, and hopelessness. I was a high school dropout, arrested for petty theft and a single mother by the age of 17.

As a young black girl during the 40s with my history, I believed it was impossible to ever create a fulfilling life or have a career outside of domestic work.  So my dominant thought was, “What’s the use of trying?”

My Windshield Life Vision

As a result of a spiritual awakening in the 1950s, the image I had held of myself as powerless, changed. The teachings, my spiritual practices of prayer, meditation, and study opened my mind to a different thought pattern of infinite possibilities. With heightened awareness and faith that transcended my color and personal history, I came to realize that my history didn’t have to be my destiny.

At age 33 I proudly graduated with a high school diploma. I continued taking business courses and in 1963 I was hired as a receptionist in the county purchasing department.

Over a period of 12 years and many promotions, I successfully achieved the highest clerical position the county offered. As Principal Supervising Trainer,

Successful Girl
I was now charged with training clerical staff. My new definition of success, and arriving at a different destination than I had originally believed possible had been accomplished. I was thrilled!

My definition of what success and destinations would look like have changed many times over the years.  Yet, I can attest to the truth of the adage that, when you change your thinking, you change your life.

What do you think when you notice the beauty and symmetry of a fragile snowflake, or the lacy, yet strong design of a spider web? To the other extreme, how can we ignore the cross-section of the trunk of a giant sequoia tree with ring, after ring neatly circling the previous year’s growth? Is that happenstance or by divine design?

I belong to the school that believes there is a Divine pattern in all creation. It would appear that the greatest of all forces, the power, the infinite directive factor in and back of the universe is something that we are forced to label Mind or Intelligence.

What if what we term our mind cannot be other than part of the Universal Mind? When you think about it, there’s nothing else for it to be part of. The One Mind is always creative, directive; the cause back of everything, and each of us is an individualization of it.

Our minds, being part of It, would have to be creative to a certain degree. Yes, and, our minds also love to associate one thing to another, but as we get stuck in very fixed patterns of thinking, we think of fewer and fewer connections. We are ruled by habits, associations and automatic responses.

The good news is, we have choice. Unlike other species, human beings can monitor our own evolutionary process. Better yet, we have the awareness and power to design our evolutionary path. As creators, we can design and manifest dramatic, profound change.

We can live life from a consciousness of fear, limitation doubt or passivity resulting in a life of mediocrity and one that is lived by default.

Choice Crossroad
But if we choose differently; if we choose to live life deliberately, with a purpose, a clear vision, we access the power of the universe to work in, through, and as us, always leading to a greater, more creative and fulfilling life.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi reminds us of the inherent evolutionary impulse in his assertion, “Consciousness is the basis of all life and the field of all possibilities. Its nature is to expand and unfold its full potential. The impulse to evolve is thus inherent in the very nature of life.”

Our challenge is to break free of our present concept of reality to create brand new dreams that will bring the ideal to life.

There is no limit in this universe of infinite possibilities.  The only limitation is within ourselves for we cannot achieve or receive more than our vision.  As we look through the windshield to our future, can we completely trust that we are led, guided and inspired by the Living Spirit of Love and right action?

We know we have been given the Kingdom, a field of infinite possibilities.  Knowing this we have two options.  You must realize that you are not just a man or woman, but a spirit inhabiting a body. That you are limitless in your potential. You can be, do, or have, anything you envision as your life.

Let’s remind ourselves of Jesus’ words about our inner divine design referred to by many as potential, “Neither shall they say, see here! Or, see there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”                          — Luke 17:21

Opening to the new requires more than just releasing the old. We must then commit to the practices of the principles that call an awareness of the Christ Presence within us forth into our world.

You are one and the same with the infinite; you carry the raw omnipotent power of the infinite, therefore you are unstoppable. As you set forth your wants and needs for 2018, believe the ground you stand on is holy, claim the good you desire as your right, and believe it has already been done unto you,. Know that you will access the Kingdom and attract into your experience all the good that is yours by divine right.

As we know, we are what we think all day long. Let’s align ourselves with the Infinite Source of Life and let Life flow through us as right action and true expression.
