“When you lift the veil of the question, “Who am I?” the first thing you recognize is that you are not your story.
— Mark Matousek, bestselling author, and teacher
How do you view your life? What stories are you telling yourself and others about your life? Is your story a tragic melodrama, or a story of inspiration and possibility?
Are you stuck in the story of your family of origin, the story of society or your culture that is no longer serving you?
Are you familiar with this classic story that makes the humorous point of how easy it is to live the story of our history?
“A family including two sisters, mother, and grandmother, were joyfully preparing a Thanksgiving meal. As one sister was preparing the ham, she cut off both ends of the ham and placed it in the pan.
“Her sister, watching, says, “Why do we always cut the ham that way?” “Hmmm,” the other sister replied, “I don’t know, that’s just the way mom always did it. Let’s ask her!” So after asking their mom, she replies, “Hmmm, I don’t know, that’s just the way my mom always did it. Let’s ask Grandma.”
“They round up grandma and ask her, and she matter of factly says, “Oh, that’s because the pan was little and that’s the only way it would fit in the pan!”
Hmmm! This story invites us to question some of our habits, beliefs, and historical stories, doesn’t it?
Uncovering the Cloud of Your Purpose
Have you ever asked yourself the questions of who am I? Why am I here, or what is my purpose?
I belong to the school that believes we are created in the image of the Divine and are individualized expressions of It. And that within each of us there is a divine blueprint or pattern that has infinite ways of being viewed and potentially expressed as our life purpose.
Our purpose may be clouded over with the stories we tell about our experiences and how we believe life has treated us. Perhaps our story is of not being enough or being
too much. Or maybe it’s about being unlovable or a fraud. Or maybe it’s about not belonging or that it’s just too late.
Whatever that core foundational story is, we know that the time comes when we realize it is no longer serving us and in order to move forward we have to let it go.
As you might imagine, one of the next questions that come up for us is, how do I let go of what’s no longer serving me?
Amy Van Linge, President of the Brentwood Unity Board of Trustees, put it this way, “Pain pushes you until your purpose pulls you.”
So if you believed that the divine design within you is simply covered and veiled by the clouds of your story waiting to be cleared, what would your next step be?
Your Passion and Purpose
While it is not as simple as it may sound, I love this succinct statement by Blake Mycoskie, which encapsulates the heart of dissipating the cloud of not knowing your purpose. He writes “If you organize your life around your passion, you can turn your passion into your story and then turn your story into something bigger — something that matters.”
Another way this may be said is, as you connect with your deepest desires, heal and release the beliefs that drive the stories that may be blocking your progress, your purpose becomes clearer.
You are able to see a bigger picture, have a vision, set an intention and begin navigating through the stages and phases that reveal the perfect divine blueprint of who you truly are and who you have come here to be.
On one level of understanding we are in parallel universes, “in the world, but not of it,” On another level of understanding there is no experience of separation, but a knowing as Jesus said, “The Father and I are one.”
In the New Testament we find these scriptures, “My dear people, we are already the children of God… All I know is that when the whole pattern is revealed we should be like him [The Christ].” 1st John 3: 2
“But when a person changes [lets their story go] and follows the Lord [the divine within], that covering [cloud, veil] is taken away. The Lord is the Spirit. And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Our faces, then, are not covered. We all show the Lord’s glory, and we are being changed to be like him [The Christ]. This change in us brings more and more glory. And it comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” — 2nd Corinthians 3: 16 -17 ICB
Create a Planetary Story
This excerpt copied from Inspiremetoday.com on 9/23/13 www.inspiremetoday.com/profile.php?id=1359 by my friend David Christopher, author of the book The Holy Universe invites us to consider a larger planetary story:
“Finally, mind your contribution to our larger story.
Ponder your place in the possibility
that we are growing beyond
both the story of gods and goddesses
serving or stymying us
and the old scientific story
of a decaying and meaningless Universe
to a new story of the Infinite,
a Planetary Story of a mysteriously creative Universe.
Know that we each have a place
in the birth of this emerging story,
and that yours is a vital role as midwife.
For it is through our new story that we can awaken
to a deeper communion with Earth,
know and love our place within her Web of Life,
rejoice in her,
and share in her bounty.
And we do so with gratitude, respect,
for we know that, while we have learned much,
there is still much to learn
as our Planetary Story awakens within our Holy Universe.’
“The theme you choose may change or simply elude you, but being your own story means you can always choose the tone. It also means that you can invent the language to say who you are and what you mean.” — Toni Morrison
I invite you to join me in dismantling any story of not enoughness and creating a story of your/our place in our Holy Universe.
