“The future is not some place we are going, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but to be made. The activity of making them changes the maker and the destination.” — John Charles
Most of us find an upcoming new year an invitation to reflect on our successes, wanted and unwanted of the past year, and a time to vision toward the future of what we want in 2018 and beyond.
I am fascinated by Pastor Chad Veach’s analogy in his book— Faith, Forward, Future: Moving Past Your Disappointments, Delays, and Destructive Thinking — of his use of the automobile windshield as a way of looking toward the future and the rearview mirror as a way of looking at your past.
It’s his way of saying, view the future and what you want with a wide lens, and reflect on the past to assess what you can do differently, with a narrow lens. In other words, don’t spend too much time looking back.
I think it’s safe to say that most of us want a life that is successful,; that is filled with meaning, purpose, and happiness. What if in truth we are always successful based on the habitual thinking patterns we have set up in our mind?
I invite you to consider with me the idea of success, perhaps in a different way. if our patterns of thinking are of health, harmony, happiness, and abundance, then our experiences of what we want would be considered successful.
By the same token, If our patterns of thinking are of lack, limitation, doubt, worry, and fear, then, wouldn’t it also be true that our experience of what we don’t want also be considered successful?
The adage, “Thoughts are things and you are the thinker thinking the thoughts that become the things in your life”, is a classic way of saying, our experience is going to successfully reflect our conscious or unconscious habitual thought patterns.
My Rear View Mirror Life Reflection
By the time I was 15 I had set up a mental atmosphere of failure. In retrospect, I see how successful I was at creating a thought pattern of unworthiness, powerlessness, and hopelessness. I was a high school dropout, arrested for petty theft and a single mother by the age of 17.
As a young black girl during the 40s with my history, I believed it was impossible to ever create a fulfilling life or have a career outside of domestic work. So my dominant thought was, “What’s the use of trying?”
My Windshield Life Vision
As a result of a spiritual awakening in the 1950s, the image I had held of myself as powerless, changed. The teachings, my spiritual practices of prayer, meditation, and study opened my mind to a different thought pattern of infinite possibilities. With heightened awareness and faith that transcended my color and personal history, I came to realize that my history didn’t have to be my destiny.
At age 33 I proudly graduated with a high school diploma. I continued taking business courses and in 1963 I was hired as a receptionist in the county purchasing department.
Over a period of 12 years and many promotions, I successfully achieved the highest clerical position the county offered. As Principal Supervising Trainer,
I was now charged with training clerical staff. My new definition of success, and arriving at a different destination than I had originally believed possible had been accomplished. I was thrilled!
My definition of what success and destinations would look like have changed many times over the years. Yet, I can attest to the truth of the adage that, when you change your thinking, you change your life.
What do you think when you notice the beauty and symmetry of a fragile snowflake, or the lacy, yet strong design of a spider web? To the other extreme, how can we ignore the cross-section of the trunk of a giant sequoia tree with ring, after ring neatly circling the previous year’s growth? Is that happenstance or by divine design?
I belong to the school that believes there is a Divine pattern in all creation. It would appear that the greatest of all forces, the power, the infinite directive factor in and back of the universe is something that we are forced to label Mind or Intelligence.
What if what we term our mind cannot be other than part of the Universal Mind? When you think about it, there’s nothing else for it to be part of. The One Mind is always creative, directive; the cause back of everything, and each of us is an individualization of it.
Our minds, being part of It, would have to be creative to a certain degree. Yes, and, our minds also love to associate one thing to another, but as we get stuck in very fixed patterns of thinking, we think of fewer and fewer connections. We are ruled by habits, associations and automatic responses.
The good news is, we have choice. Unlike other species, human beings can monitor our own evolutionary process. Better yet, we have the awareness and power to design our evolutionary path. As creators, we can design and manifest dramatic, profound change.
We can live life from a consciousness of fear, limitation doubt or passivity resulting in a life of mediocrity and one that is lived by default.
But if we choose differently; if we choose to live life deliberately, with a purpose, a clear vision, we access the power of the universe to work in, through, and as us, always leading to a greater, more creative and fulfilling life.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi reminds us of the inherent evolutionary impulse in his assertion, “Consciousness is the basis of all life and the field of all possibilities. Its nature is to expand and unfold its full potential. The impulse to evolve is thus inherent in the very nature of life.”
Our challenge is to break free of our present concept of reality to create brand new dreams that will bring the ideal to life.
There is no limit in this universe of infinite possibilities. The only limitation is within ourselves for we cannot achieve or receive more than our vision. As we look through the windshield to our future, can we completely trust that we are led, guided and inspired by the Living Spirit of Love and right action?
We know we have been given the Kingdom, a field of infinite possibilities. Knowing this we have two options. You must realize that you are not just a man or woman, but a spirit inhabiting a body. That you are limitless in your potential. You can be, do, or have, anything you envision as your life.
Let’s remind ourselves of Jesus’ words about our inner divine design referred to by many as potential, “Neither shall they say, see here! Or, see there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” — Luke 17:21
Opening to the new requires more than just releasing the old. We must then commit to the practices of the principles that call an awareness of the Christ Presence within us forth into our world.
You are one and the same with the infinite; you carry the raw omnipotent power of the infinite, therefore you are unstoppable. As you set forth your wants and needs for 2018, believe the ground you stand on is holy, claim the good you desire as your right, and believe it has already been done unto you,. Know that you will access the Kingdom and attract into your experience all the good that is yours by divine right.
I WISH YOU BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS, TREASURED MEMORIES, AND ALL THE BLESSINGS A HEART CAN KNOW.
